It helps if you include: your phone or watch model, the iOS / Android version, the app version (shown in Settings), your instrument, and what you expected to happen. A screenshot or a short screen recording is very welcome.

String Tuner is free — completely

There are no in-app purchases, no subscription, no account and no advertising. Nothing is locked, so there is nothing to restore or cancel. If anyone asks you to pay for String Tuner, it is not us.

Frequently asked questions

Tuning

The needle does not move

The app needs access to the microphone. If you declined it, the tuner says so and explains how to allow it:

  • iPhone / iPad: Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → turn on String Tuner.
  • Android: Settings → Apps → String Tuner → Permissions → Microphone → Allow.

Then play one string at a time, fairly close to the phone. Very quiet notes, or several strings at once, are harder to read.

The needle lags behind my bow

You are probably using a Bluetooth headset or earbuds as the microphone. Bluetooth adds about 150 ms of delay — the app shows a note when this happens. Disconnect the headset, or use the phone's built-in microphone, for a needle that follows you instantly.

My orchestra tunes to A = 442 Hz (or 415, or 443)

Open Settings → Reference A4 and set the pitch your ensemble uses. Some tunings, such as Baroque, carry their own reference pitch; the settings screen tells you when that is the case.

How precise is it? What does “in tune” mean?

You decide. Settings → “In tune” range sets how close is close enough, in cents (a hundredth of a semitone). A narrower range is stricter.

Can I tune to something other than equal temperament?

Yes. Settings → Tuning system offers historical temperaments and tuning systems from Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Indian traditions. You can also add your own scale from a Scala file with Settings → Import a scale… (.scl, or a .txt that contains one). The tuner follows scales that repeat at the octave.

Note names are in letters, but I learned Do-Re-Mi

Settings → Note names offers C D E… B, the German and Czech C D E… H, Do Re Mi, and Indian Sa Re Ga.

Teacher mode

How do I share a setup with my students?

In Teacher mode, show your setup or assignment as a QR code. Students tap Scan setup and point their camera at your screen. No internet, no account and no e-mail addresses are needed.

“That code needs a newer version of the app”

The code was made in a newer String Tuner than the one scanning it. Update the app from the App Store or Google Play and scan again.

Scanning does not start

Scanning needs the camera. Allow it in your phone's settings (Privacy & Security → Camera on iPhone, Apps → String Tuner → Permissions on Android). The camera is used for nothing else.

Apple Watch and widget

The watch does not show the needle

The watch shows what the iPhone hears, so String Tuner must be open on the iPhone and the watch must be nearby and connected. Open the watch app while the tuner is listening on the phone.

How do I add the widget?

Touch and hold the home screen, tap + (or Edit → Add Widget), and search for String Tuner. It shows your last tune-up, and a tap opens the tuner.

Your data

Is my playing recorded?

No. Sound is analysed live on your device and immediately discarded. The app itself sends nothing to anyone. Details are in the privacy policy.

How do I move my data to a new phone?

Everything lives on your device, so it moves with a normal device backup and restore (iCloud Backup, a computer backup, or Android's own backup). There is no String Tuner account to sign in to.

How do I delete everything?

Settings → Delete all data erases your history, badges, teacher assignments and results and imported scales. It keeps your instrument settings. Uninstalling the app removes everything.
